To get all those non-drinkers/brewers in the same page as us beer fiends, this first taste is going to explain some of the general terminology I'll be using.

Beer #1, Victory HopDevil Ale

which is:
6.7% Alcohol By Volume (ABV) and around 60 International Bittering Units (IBU)
Served from 12Oz. Bottle to pint glass with a plate of BBQ wings

Apperance:
Poured a very clear copper/amber color, almost boardering on red. very light on the carbonation (very few of those little trailing bubbles you see inside the liquid) but with a fantasticly huge pale golden head. Very frothy, I had to give it a minute before I could pour in the rest of the beer

Aroma:

Very nice aroma, it smells like a hoppy beer, which it is. You get a mild noseful of a spicy, fruitish aroma, with a background of hop

Taste:
Very balanced beer. The first thing you taste is the bitterness emparted by the use of hops, at 60IBU, that's alot of hops ;). There is a mild astringent taste as well, characteristic of the IPA style. A hint of some spicey fruit appears after the taste of hops subsides.

After:
Hopdevil has a slightly dry finish, leaving you with a hint of the alcohol in your mouth, and some of the hop flavor.

Overall:
Hopdevil is a very smooth, although strong, IPA. It goes down easy with a bit of a bite to it. It has a characteristic IPA finish, and pairs fantastic with any grill type meat (ribs, wings, BBQ, burgers, etc). Best way to serve Victory Hopdevil is COLD COLD COLD.

Score: * * * * .5 / * * * * *

How bad work became a good day!

As you can see below, I was bored enough at work today to make a post (Coworkers: but Adam, all you do every day is play with tools, what made today more boring than the rest?) Shaddap guys, don't you have some powdered sugar to be smearing around?

Anyways, on my way home, (after remembering that the house was dry... I.E. no BEER) I stopped at Vintage Estate (Formerly Felix wines) and picked up an assorted 6 pack from their MASSIVE selection of specialty brews. As I drink them, I'll relay my thoughts. I'm doing this for 2 reasons.

1) I like beer, and I've drank alot of it. I can tell you a good be from a bad beer, and I have nothing better to talk about

2) we got our results back from the Ohio State Fair beer judging, and I can honestly say we got shafted. Our beer was entered as an American Amber Ale (I.E. Mild IPA/APA). Our judges were NOT Certified Beer Judges (yes, there is a rigorous certification program, and OSF does have them on hand for this tasting)....Instead, our judges checked the "Amature/Experience" box. Hell, I'm an experienced beer drinker, but I KNOW I'm not capable of judging a show as big as OSF. So anyways, our "Judges" for the most part had no idea what the hell they were drinking, most of them got a bit confused when it came to the style guidelines for APA/AAA beers, and only one out of the 5 understood that we bottle aged the beer (which creates individualized carbonation and increases the alcohol content slightly, but creates small bits of particulate at the bottom, and I mean small bits). I honestly feel, if we had judges that were properly trained, we would have fared significantly better than the middle of the road "Good" rating we got. So basicly, if those rejects can be tasters, I can be better.

Anyways, the beer list. On the taste list are the followings:

Straub Organic (Greenie) - http://straubbeer.com - Greenies is the nickname for the beer that straub only distributes locally, or to very special vendors. It's rare to see these green bottles outside of the general area of the brewery these days.

Arcadia Whitsun - http://www.arcadiabrewingcompany.com

Victory Prima Pils - http://www.victorybeer.com

Victory Hop Devil - http://www.victorybeer.com - As a side note, we just made a decent sized batch of this, but while that's fermenting, I wanted to cheat a bit and sneak a taste of the official brew, for comparison

Stay tuned!

for the love of all that is holy, I'm bored, sleepy, hungry and I want to go home >_< Work is teh suck today

Creative explosion, work overload! Weeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Busy, busy, busy this week. I'm actually working a full week over at the store, which is like double the hours I'm used to. Good for my paycheck, probably bad for my sanity ;) . Here on the homefront, I have been in an anti-slump creativly. I've started 3 projects in the last week, and 2 are done already, with no signs of me slowing down :D. Project 1 was a commission piece I'm calling "Atlas" (oooohhhh original name!)

Number 2 was about 4 days of loooong, late nights slaving over the tablet (I.E. I was in the zone, never even bothered to check the clock, when I looked up and saw it was starting to get light, I went to bed lol). "Gundam" is probably one of my favorite pieces so far, as it was one of the most challenging from the design standpoint. Instead of doing a whole figure, and sacrificing some of the details to size, I chose to do roughly a 1/2 bust type shot. I think I ended up watching episodes 3 & 4 of GundamSeed like 15 times (reaserch, ya know!) to make sure everything was looking decent. On a side note, "Gundam" may (still debating) be available as a 23"x35" full color print here in the near future. If I decide to offer some works in print, it will most likely be on a rotating basis, so who knows.

A Day of Updated Thingies! And Those Pictures I Promised!

Lets see, where to start. Since I finished up the Blademaster finally (ugh, it sooooo sucked not being able to work on it for a week and a half while my eyes healed) I've been able to finish up some other projects, like finally posting pictures of my new, mega-uber ultra PC, the DEMON.

Let me gush for a sec about the wonderful thing that is the AMD64 processor. Having a gig of system ram may help a bit, but Digimortal had that too, and Demon renders 3d and processes all my graphics stuff in literally 1/2 the time. Gaming? Not even an issue. We've got this pimp Sony rig at work sporting a hyperthreading, watercooled Intel P4, and we had to turn the settings on Farcry down to medium to get it to run right. Here at home, I'm playing with every setting on maximum without even graphics lag! EQ? Full models, full clipping, full raid, no problem yo!

Also changed the selection in the radio to more currently match my winamp playlist. What more could you want out of an update? Considering this is my first real day off of the week (busy busy busy with junk) it better not be much :P

So where the heck have YOU been?!

Well, It's a bit of a story. I've been almost blind, blind, in alot of pain, bleary and now I can see just fine. Why? It's called Lasik. Since I was little (like 6), I've had glasses. In high School, I got contact lenses. My eyes were pretty bad, being nearsighted, I couldn't see objects that were more than 1ft. in front of my face, and even with vision correction, my distance vision was never quite spot on. I've always wondered how the world looked to normal people, I was sure it was alot like what I saw, but somehow... different. That, combined with the fact that soon, I'd be on my own when it comes to paying for changes in my eyes (current contact supply runs out in like 3 months, and glasses are 3 years old) prompted me to try something radical.

With the help of my parents (College Graduation present, yea, I got my degree finally, did I mention that?)and the fantastic doctors at the Cleveland branch of LasikPlus I went under the laser on June 29th.

Once your on the table, the process takes about 10 minutes, at the most. The first step is getting about a half gallon of numbing drops dumped in each eye, after which my left eye was covered. Mr. Right eye was clamped open under 3 very intense lights. It's uncomfortable to say the very least. After my eye "relaxes" (the eye, not me HAHA) the doctor makes the "flap" incision. A small ring is placed onto my eye surface, and a rather intense pressure starts as it's pushed down (I had quick flashes of a kid stepping on a water balloon). Vacuum is applied to maintain the eyes shape after it is cut open. When the vacuum hits, you vision goes black. You hear a grinding, dentists drill type noise and feel some slight pressure on your eye (ontop of the locking ring pressure).

The locking rings are removed and a flap of my corneal tissue is lifted out of the way. Everything goes blurry x10. All I can see how is this pulsing red blob of light on the ceiling. Righty was under the laser for about 1 minute 10 seconds. You don't feel anything, but there was this overwhelming stench of burning hair (I was like hmm, smells like something is burning....oh wait, that's me :P ).

Once the lasing is done, there is more blurriness and discomfort as the flap of tissue is flipped back into place, and another 1/2 gallon of some liquid is poured into my eye to smooth out the cornea again.

Left eye, same as the first, A little bit faster and the smell was worse (HA)

Total procedure was like 5-10 minutes. They slap some dark glasses on you, and tell you to go home and go to bed. The ride home (80 minutes or so) was just plain sucky. My eyes were on fire, with surges of not quite pain, often very intense (I liken it to being as mild as cutting onions, to the outright burn of pepper spray). Any light was the devil, I had an extra shirt that was in the car over my face the entire ride to block out everything.

They tell you to go home and nap after the procedure, and frankly, I can't imagine doing anything but that. I slept for about 4 hours. When I woke up, my eyes felt like glue. Like I had grit in them constantly. I was still very light sensitive (wearing sunglasses the rest of the day) but I could see (things were still a bit on the blurry side). The burning sensation was almost gone, but occasionally resurfaced.

The next day I felt like I had been wearing my contacts for way to long, and the lenses were dry. I was still blurry (or so I thought) but my post-op exam revealed a startling 20/20 vision in both eyes.

Tomorrow is the last day of eye drop style medication for me, and the one week mark since the operation. I can see great, my night vision is still a bit off, and towards the evening my eyes get tired and give me slight headaches, but it's well worth it.

Hopefully I will get back to work on a few projects, and get back onto track with all my other stuff inside of the next week or so (lasik takes really about a full month to heal completely).

SigX! The fresh maker.
